October Sunday Sonix Series welcomes Gelareh Pour as our curator for the month. Gelareh looks into the exploration of solo sonix in response to our surroundings. In her childhood school in Iran, Gelareh searched for a quiet space where she could practice and develop her musicianship undisturbed. She found it in a cupboard underneath the stairs. It became an intimate place of refuge, solitude, fantasy, and possibility. 

Drawing on this experience, and Punctum’s Mentored Intensives partnership with Australian Art Orchestra, Gelareh is leading an enquiry into sonic responses to unique spaces in which our daily lives play out. Joining her in this month’s Sunday Sonix Series are celebrated vocalists and sonic artists Myles Mumford, Carolyn Connors and Aimee Chapman.

Gelareh Pour
Iranian-born Persian Kamancheh and Qeychak player, singer, and songwriter Gelareh Pour pursued her BA at the Art University of Tehran’s conservatorium and completed her Masters of Ethnomusicology at The University of Melbourne. She conducted unique academic research on ‘The Lives of Iranian Women Singers in Diaspora’ at MCM, exploring the professional trajectories of seven Iranian female singers before and after migration. 
 
Gelareh’s performances span Iran, Tajikistan, Europe, and Australia. In Australia, she collaborates with innovative musicians and organizations such as the Australian Art Orchestra, Punctum, Rubiks Collective, Cultural Infusion, ANU, University of Melbourne, Boîte, Multicultural Arts Victoria, and more. Her versatility and cross-cultural interests lead her to engage in diverse music genres, including improvisation, experimentation, cross-cultural fusion, classical, electronic, and new music. Gelareh remains committed to collaborating across genres, particularly in the realm of new Australian music. 

Myles Mumford
Myles Mumford pushes the envelope of expression in the audio realm.  A prolific record producer, engineer and sound artist, Myles refuses to submit to genres, engaging in musical expression wherever he can. From Avant Garde to Classic, from Pop to Punk, Myles explores auditory art with reckless activity and embraces musical expression without boundaries. 
 
He is well known for his musical and collaborative approach to recording, and his ability to create a sense of presence and space. Myles’ productions can be heard across Australian radio and a wide variety of streaming services and regularly receives critical acclaim in the form of featured singles, featured albums, or album of the week in a variety of contemporary media. 

Carolyn Connors
Carolyn Connors creates works with extended techniques and objects. Solo appearances include the Melbourne Recital Centre, Avantwhatever Festival, Sydney Festival, and La Mama. Carolyn also collaborates to develop new ensemble works, including Stranger (Aviva Endean, 2022); Siren Song (Byron Scullin Dark Mofo, Perth Festival, Rising Festival); Between 8 and 9 (Castlemaine State Festival, recipient 2017 George Fairfax New Theatre Award). Acknowledgments include The Age Melbourne Music Genre Award: Best experimental/avantgarde act 2015, and JJJ Best Female Performer, Melbourne Fringe. 

Aimee Chapman
Aimee Chapman, a versatile performing artist and electronic producer, navigates diverse genres, spanning electronic, pop, and jazz. Her music has earned global recognition, with extensive tours across continents and releases on both independent and label platforms. Aimee’s creative impact extends internationally, featuring in media and multimedia projects. Notably, she co-wrote a track with luminaries like Sally Seltmann and Paul Dempsey, released by littlebigman/EMI, accompanied by a live concert and documentary.

Aimee’s community-oriented projects have earned accolades, including the Phee Broadway Residency and Loddon Mallee Renewable Energy Arts Award. She is also deeply involved in music education, mentoring through Save the Children programs and facilitating workshops worldwide. With an academic background from prestigious institutions, Aimee combines her knowledge with her musical passion to create unique experiences in the industry.
