Seedpod artist Rae Howell is developing a new work in residence at 41 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat, from May 8 – 19.
The Piano: Hook, Line and Tinker is a public ‘undoing’ of a piano, where the components of a retired acoustic upright, will be turned inside-out, and dissected for perusal.
You are invited to walk through and examine the many thousands of parts that make up a piano, from the inside action mechanism – the levers, pins and hammers, to the keys, trapwork, and cabinetry.
Join Rae for an insight into the piano’s modus operandi, its complex mechanical beauty, and an impression of its 100-year+ history, including the many possible stories from its lifetime.
Where: 41 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat 3350 (between The George Hotel and the Regent Cinema).
When: Thursday May 18 and Friday May 19 from 4:30pm-6:30pm, with artist in conversation at 6pm each evening.

Rae Howell is an Australian composer, multi-instrumentalist and piano artisan. She is founding director of Sunwrae, a music performance and production enterprise for a range of concert hall and multi-artform projects, and Opportune Pianos, her ventures as a piano tuner and technician. She has studied and worked professionally in many places over the globe, including Melbourne, London, and New York, and has produced a large catalogue of original music albums, publications, collaborative recordings and sound designs.
Rae’s work as an artist is inspired by, and directly derived from environmental concerns, emerging from the buzz of a bee, the call of a bird, or the hammer of a piano. Her awards include a UNESCO Aschberg Bursary, a Finzi Trust Scholarship (UK), the Eric Stokes Award (USA), the Momentum Commission (AU), and the BigCi Environmental Award. She is a fellow of Yaddo and the Millay Artist Colony in New York, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center in Nebraska, and The Banff Centre Canada, and has been visiting composer for numerous projects and residencies in the USA, South America, West Africa, Europe, Palestine, Vietnam, and Australia. www.raehowell.me
