The SUNDAY SONIX SERIES is a regular gathering and showcase of artists working in improvisation and experimental sound and music, from our region and beyond. It is an opportunity for artists to expand their practice and for audiences to step into the adventure with them.
In June we’re excited to share the exceptional sonics and live performances of five artists offering their perspective on ‘Duos, Duets, and Dualogues’.
Whether as a program of performances, pieces, duels or sonic dialogues, this concert brings together artists creating at the edge of ‘the twosome’ including: Zoë Barry, Aryo Hall, Adrian Sherriff, and No Man’s Land.
Zoë Barry
Zoë is a cellist, composer, performance maker and educator. Her practice is collaborative and relational, drawing on composition, sound design, writing, directing and interviewing. Her work explores the politics of slowness, meaning-making, and amplifying quiet voices. She composes for theatre, film, gallery installations and audio-led works to be experienced in the home. Zoë is a member of The Letter String Quartet and Iranian trio Dafta Aval.
No Man’s Land
No Man’s Land is a duo of Pippa Bainbridge (vocals, guitar, loop pedal, effects) and Swiss Van Kalken (bass guitar, found percussion, loop pedal, effects). Together they make atmospheric doom drone, audioscapes and performance rituals, drenched in Australian folklore and inspired by the landscapes surrounding their home in the Central Highlands of Victoria. Under the moniker of No Man’s Land, Pippa and Swiss have performed improvised sets for Make It Up Club, La Mama Musica, and Be/Hear_Now, as well as in music venues across Melbourne and regional Victoria. They have also created live and recorded sound design for theatre, site specific performance and multi-channel audio experiences.
Adrian Sherriff is a performer, composer, teacher and multi-instrumentalist. In his childhood in West Papua, Adrian regularly moved between cultural contexts ranging from the stone age to the information age. This breadth of perspective has deeply informed his practice as an artist. Adrian’s musical foundations have been drawn from his studies of European classical, Afro-American jazz, South Indian classical, Japanese shakuhachi, Afro-Cuban bata, Balinese gamelan and experimental music traditions. In each of these traditions, Adrian has studied and performed with master musicians of international calibre. Adrian has also studied musics from Sumatra, Latin America, North India and Africa. Amongst his teachers, South Indian master drummer Guru Karaikudi Mani has been a particular source of ongoing inspiration.
Aryo Hall lives in Mount Alexander Shire on the unceded lands of the Djaara People. Aryo is an Indonesian/Australian emerging composer, performer, educator and band manager. He has studied Gamelan music since childhood and has since delved deeply into jazz and improvisation, traditional Cuban son and salsa and the Balkan brass tradition of East Europe. He has performed extensively around Australia and has toured and exchanged cultures with Cuba, Serbia and Indonesia.
